7. A Boy, Lost

A Boy, Lost

words and music by Matthew Greyling

Lyrics

The short, blond hair, your precious smile
Your face, right there, on every poster in the pile
We look, we stare, we search for miles
You’re family’s scared, you’ve been gone awhile
Days go by, everybody’s pitching in, we look but we can’t find
Nobody knows if they’ll see you again
Hope’s fading, everyone is holding hands and praying you’re alive
Wondering if we will ever understand
Why they came here and took you from our lives
Tried to break your family from the inside
Not knowing if you’re gonna live or die
Minutes drag seemingly forever, how long must we wait to be together?
We ask, but God’s not giving us a time

The wait is hard, the days are slow
Most lives resume, leaves have turned to snow
I don’t forget, you’re in my prayers
We’ve never met, but that does not mean I don’t care
Reporters flock to your home on the farm, record their news and leave
Caring as long as the boss says they can
Mom cries, your father holds her in his arms, but they keep their beliefs
They know it’s all part of a bigger plan
Your parents watched you as a little boy
Your presence always filled their hearts with joy
The love for trains and books and copper coins
They watched their lives go through the biggest change
Since then, nothing will ever be the same
Life no longer lived like it’s just a game

We know that you are in God’s hands
And someday soon, you’ll be home
